Walking on Texel

Texel has more than 250 kilometres of footpaths and a wide variety of landscapes, from salt marshes and dune valleys to woodland and polders full of birds.

• Dunes along the west coast: this is where you find the best-known nature reserves on the island, such as De Slufter and De Muy.
• Birdwatching: a large spoonbill colony breeds in De Geul, while on the Wadden side Dijkmanshuizen is a paradise for birds.
• For every level: from a short loop of just over 3 km to a dune walk of almost 11 km, see the walking routes.
• Views over the island: observation towers, dune tops and the lighthouse are among the finest viewpoints.
• Along the tideline: the wide beach runs along the entire west coast, from Den Hoorn to De Cocksdorp.

10 Walking routes

The waymarked walking routes on Texel lead through the dunes of De Muy and De Slufter, through the woods and across the oldest parts of the island.

• De Muy- en Slufterbollenroute (orange): at 10.7 km the longest route, mostly on natural paths through two of the finest dune areas.
• Eierlandse Duinentocht (red): 7.4 km through the rugged north of the island.
• Rondje Maartenhuis (purple): a varied 6.7 km route.
• Wandelroute De Seeting and De Seeting (blue): two routes of 6 and 4.9 km, largely on natural paths.
• Bleekersvallei (blue) and Westerduinroute (black): 6 and 5.6 km through the dunes on the west side, almost entirely unpaved.
• Rondje Dorpzicht (yellow), Hoge Nol (orange) and Ploegelanden (purple): shorter routes of 5, 4.3 and 3.2 km, ideal for a stroll.
