Nieuw Buitenheim - Nature

Nieuw Buitenheim is a young and dynamic nature reserve on the eastern side of Texel, nestled between nature reserve Dijkmanshuizen and the IJsdijk. It offers a surprising mix of tranquillity, birds and salty nature.
What can you expect at Nieuw Buitenheim?
- Bird paradise: An important breeding ground for coastal birds. Spot species such as common terns, ringed plovers, avocets and, in spring, the striking Mediterranean gull.
- Shell islands: In the water lie specially created islets where beach-nesting birds can breed safely and undisturbed.
- Saline flora: Thanks to the mix of fresh and salt water, plants like samphire, sea aster and, in the right season, even orchids thrive here.
- Unique landscape: Since its creation in 2018, it has developed into a quiet place full of life. Excavations and water bodies of varying depths create a diverse habitat for birds, insects and plants.
Practical information
