Hoge Berg - Nature

The Hoge Berg is one of the most characteristic nature areas of Texel. The rolling landscape between Den Burg and Oudeschild forms the oldest part of the island.
What makes the Hoge Berg so special?
Formed around 150,000 years ago during the Ice Age, the 15.3-metre boulder clay hill offers stunning views over the island and the Wadden Sea.
Panoramic view: From the top, you can overlook meadows, farms, and the Wadden Sea dike.- Unique soil structure: The mixture of boulders, gravel, and clay forms the base of the rare Old Land of Texel.
- Living cultural landscape: Everywhere you’ll see tuunwallen, sheep sheds, and old farms – all characteristic of Texel.
- Iconic Dutch landscape: Officially recognised since 2019 for its special natural and cultural-historical value.
Het Bossie
Het Bossie, also known as Het Doolhof, is the playful heart and highest point of the Hoge Berg.
Viewpoint: From the "seven pancakes", you can look towards the Rede van Texel.- For young and old: A popular spot for short walks and picnics.
- Colourful spring: Snowdrops, crocuses, and bluebells brighten up the small wood.
The Zandkuil
- Size: Just 0.74 hectares – small but ecologically significant.
- History: A former sand excavation from 1742, and a Natuurmonumenten nature reserve since 1925.
- Insect diversity: More than 40 species of digger wasps and bees make their nests here.
- Ecological importance: Thanks to the abundance of insects, this is a breeding ground for many meadow birds.
Sheep, Tuunwallen and Texel Tradition
- Texel sheep: World-famous for their sturdy build and fine wool.
- Tuunwallen: Stacked grass sods separating meadows and providing shelter for flowers and insects.
- Sheep sheds: Asymmetrical barns facing southwest – offering protection from the wind.
- Typically Texel: Together, these elements form the iconic landscape unique to the Netherlands.
