The bird paradise De Petten is a beautiful nature reserve near Den Hoorn, where brackish water, small islands and birds create a lively landscape.
What makes nature reserve De Petten so special?
- Breeding and resting area: De Petten is a favourite spot for birds to breed or rest during their migration. Especially in spring, the area bursts with life.
Brackish water and islands: The area consists of shallow waters and man-made protected islands, formed by the mix of salty seawater and fresh rainwater.- Unique management: To maintain the islands, shells are spread every four years. In winter, vegetation is removed to keep the area open and attractive to birds.
- Spectacular bird display: During the breeding season, you can spot shelducks, avocets, ringed plovers, black-headed gulls, terns and common terns. Greylag geese and migratory birds are also frequent visitors.
- Refuge during high tide: At very high sea levels, De Petten provides a safe haven for many bird species.
Practical tips for your visit
Location: De Petten is located on the southeast side of Texel, near Den Hoorn, between the Mok Bay and the sea dike.- Great view from the dike: Although the area itself is not accessible to walkers, you’ll have a wonderful view from the Molwerk or the sea dike!
- Best time to visit: Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons for bird lovers, with a high chance of seeing hundreds of birds at once.
- Combine with: Combine your visit with a walk through the Mok Bay or a trip to the nearby nature reserve De Geul.
