Roggesloot - Nature

Nature reserve De Roggesloot, located in the Eierlandse polder southeast of De Cocksdorp, is a former tidal creek.

What makes De Roggesloot so special?

• Rich bird area: De Roggesloot is a true paradise for meadow and reed birds. You can spot reed warblers, sedge warblers, bluethroats and sometimes even spoonbills.
• Fishing jetty and viewpoint: Along the water, a fishing jetty has been built, offering a beautiful view over the area – ideal for a peaceful break during a walk or bike ride.
• A centuries-old tidal creek: De Roggesloot once ran from the Wadden Sea all the way to De Slufter on the North Sea side. The construction of a sand dike in 1630 cut off the connection, turning the saltwater into brackish water and causing sea creatures such as rays to disappear. The ditch, however, kept its name: the ‘Roggesloot’.
• Old landscape forms visible: The five ‘nollen’ – natural elevations in the landscape – on the eastern side of the water recall earlier times, when these higher grounds served as refuges for cattle during high tides.
• Skating fun in winter: When it freezes for a long period, De Roggesloot becomes a popular skating spot for the Durpers (as the inhabitants of De Cocksdorp are called). Due to its size and depth, the water freezes relatively slowly, so patience is required.
