Grote Vlak - Nature
The Grote Vlak is one of the largest wet dune valleys in the Netherlands and part of the National Park Dunes of Texel.
What can you expect in the Grote Vlak?
- Unique wet dune valley: In spring, the area turns into a sea of yellow thanks to blooming yellow irises and other flowers; in summer you’ll see grazing animals, in autumn thousands of birds pass by, and in winter the area reveals its rugged, quiet beauty.
- Paradise for bird lovers: From the Hoornderslag – the road running right through the area – you can easily spot water birds such as ducks, coots, grebes and teal. The birds are used to visitors and can be observed well.
- Grazing animals: Scottish Highland cattle and Exmoor ponies provide natural grazing. On warm days, you can even see these impressive animals cooling off in the water. Cattle and horses also contribute to the open character of the landscape.
- Walking opportunities: All year round you can enjoy wonderful walks in and around the Grote Vlak. During the breeding season, some paths are closed, but there are always routes open where you can fully enjoy nature.
- Historical background: In the 15th century, this area was still a tidal inlet where ships sailed. Later it dried up and was used for farming and water extraction. Since 1993, Staatsbosbeheer has allowed nature to take its course again. The water level is now more balanced, creating a marshy and flower-rich landscape.
