De Schicht - Monument

The monument De Schicht is a striking sculpture on Texel that commemorates the raising of the dikes to Delta height – an important step in protecting the island from the sea.
What does De Schicht stand for?
- Symbolic Design: The steel sculpture follows the contours of the eastern coastline of Texel and stands firmly on a base of basalt stones – symbolising the reinforced Delta dikes.
- Texel Design: The artwork was designed in 1981 by Texel artist Harry Tielemans and unveiled by Minister H.J. Zeevalking.
- Historical Meaning: It was commissioned by the former water authority of Texel, which wanted to make the island’s struggle against the sea permanently visible.
- Unique Location: You can find De Schicht just east of De Cocksdorp, along the cycle path on the Wadden Sea dike near the De Eendracht polder – a perfect stop during a cycling trip.
- Today: The Wadden Sea dikes and the monument are now managed by the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier water board.
