Fort De Lunette - Monument

Along the Waddendijk, just south of Oudeschild, lies Fort De Lunette – a quiet reminder of the time of Napoleon, strategically built to defend Texel.
What can you expect at Fort De Lunette?
- Napoleonic Defence Work: Fort De Lunette was built in 1811 on the orders of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte as part of a defensive line together with Fort De Schans and De Redoute.
Strategic Location: The fort lies halfway between the harbour of Oudeschild and Fort De Schans, once guarding access to the Hoge Berg and Den Burg.- Historical Significance: The French expected attacks from the west; the cannons of De Lunette were aimed in that direction.
- Restoration and Heritage: After being partially excavated in 1931, the fort became a monument in 1976. In 2010, Natuurmonumenten partially restored the earthen walls to their original shape.
