Seamen’s Church of Oudeschild

The white church of Oudeschild, located on Trompstraat, is a beautiful historic monument with a rich maritime history. This characteristic church, built in the 17th century, served for centuries as a spiritual haven for sailors anchored in the Rede van Texel.
What makes the Seamen’s Church special?
- A Church for Sailors: Between 1648 and 1650, this church was built as a house of prayer for the local community, but it quickly became a meeting point for the many sailors waiting for favourable winds off the coast of Oudeschild. Especially in the 18th century, church attendance was huge, leading to an extension on the north side in 1740.
- Famous Visitors: Admirals Cornelis Tromp and Michiel de Ruyter, who often stayed on Texel, regularly attended this church. They also contributed to the church’s furnishings.
- Impressive Chandeliers: The church boasts three impressive chandeliers, the first of which was donated by Cornelis Tromp. De Ruyter, who often stayed on Texel with his family, didn’t want to be outdone and donated an even more beautiful and larger chandelier. The third chandelier was likely donated by the widow of Tromp.
- Historical Treasures: Inside the church, you’ll find a unique Ten Commandments plaque from 1651, donated by the Zaanse sailor Van Glasko. The original pulpit with baptismal font holder from 1650 is still in use.
- Gravestone of the First Minister: In front of the pulpit lies the gravestone of Antonius Damburgh, the first minister of the church.
- Restoration and Preservation: Between 1970 and 1971, the church was restored and saved from decline. Since 2003, a beautiful ship model adorns the interior, complementing the church’s seafaring history.
