Church of Den Hoorn

The Hervormde Church of Den Hoorn is one of the most distinctive and photographed buildings on Texel. Located on Kerkstraat in Den Hoorn, this white church has stood as a landmark in the landscape since 1425. The tower, added in 1450, still plays an important role in the area and, together with a light beacon in the dunes, forms a light line for navigation.
What makes the church of Den Hoorn so special?
- Centuries-old history: The church dates back to the 15th century and was built to replace a wooden chapel from 1409. Over the centuries, the building has undergone many changes, with the tower being integrated into the west façade.
- A church full of stories: Once, the church stood in the centre of Den Hoorn, but due to the decline after the peak of shipping, many houses disappeared. Today, the church stands on the northern edge of the village and is a symbol of the rich history of Texel.
- National monument: The Hervormde Church of Den Hoorn is a national monument and is carefully maintained. The characteristic white tower beautifully contrasts with the blue sky and is a popular subject for photographers and visitors.
- Church and light beacon: On the balustrade around the top of the tower are three spotlights. Together with a low-lying light beacon in the dunes southwest of Den Hoorn, they form a light line that helps guide ships.
