Minkewaal - Nature

A small but lively nature reserve full of birds, located between two dikes on the southern side of the Wagejot and near the IJzeren Kaap.
What to expect at the Minkewaal
- Birdwatching: In spring and summer, the area is teeming with black-tailed godwits, redshanks, shelducks, and spoonbills.
Sand martin wall: A concrete nesting wall with holes provides a home for many sand martins each year – a fascinating sight during the breeding season.- Migratory species: During migration periods, you can often spot white and yellow wagtails (including the rare northern and British varieties) and meadow pipits.
- Ducks and waders: The pond attracts a wide range of species, including shovelers, gadwalls, wigeons, turnstones, and dunlins.
- Peace and view: The Minkewaal is small but easy to overlook – perfect for a short stop with binoculars or a camera.

Location: The Minkewaal is located along the Lancasterdijk, south of the Wagejot and close to the IJzeren Kaap.- Accessibility: The area is not open to visitors, but it can easily be viewed from the Lancasterdijk, which is accessible to cars, cyclists, and pedestrians.
- Best time to visit: Spring and summer for breeding birds; autumn and winter for overwintering ducks and waders.
