Wagejot - Nature

Nature reserve Wagejot is located on the east coast of Texel, near Oosterend, and is known as a true haven for birds and birdwatchers.
What makes nature reserve Wagejot so special?
- Food-rich mudflats: In the shallow brackish water live countless small fish, insects and algae. From the muddy bottom, birds use their long beaks to pull up snails, worms, shellfish and shrimps.
- Perfect breeding ground: Between April and June, Wagejot is a favourite spot for breeding birds. The bare and sparsely vegetated islets provide a safe and quiet environment for species such as avocets, oystercatchers, ringed plovers and common terns. During this period, you can also spot the fluffy chicks exploring.
- Bird paradise outside the breeding season: Even after spring, Wagejot remains attractive. Waders use the area for resting and feeding. At high tide on the Wadden Sea, thousands of birds flock to Wagejot and the surrounding inland pools.
- Floral splendour: Besides birds, Wagejot also features special plants, including orchids and colourful wildflowers that add extra charm to the landscape in summer.
- Created during dike reinforcement: Wagejot was created in 1977 when a new sea dike was constructed further seaward. Between the old and the new dike, a marshy plain remained, which developed into a food-rich bird reserve.
