Kaap Skil - Museum

Kaap Skil in Oudeschild on Texel is the museum of beachcombers and seafarers. It tells of the Texel Roads, shipwrecks and the island's seafaring, with an indoor museum and an open-air museum.
What can you expect at Kaap Skil?
History: Kaap Skil succeeded the Maritiem & Jutters Museum. The 2011 building by Mecanoo has four gabled roofs that nod to the harbour houses. In 2014 Texel divers found the Palmwood Wreck, one of the richest shipwreck finds in the Netherlands.
Highlights: Highlights of Kaap Skil are:
- The silk dress from the Palmwood Wreck (around 1620 to 1630), almost four centuries on the seabed and now shown in an oxygen-free display case.
- The silver dress from the same wreck, woven with silver plates, probably a wedding dress.
- Other finds from the wreck, such as a gilded silver goblet and a luxury toiletry set.
- The model of the Texel Roads, 18 metres long with about 160 ships, according to the museum the largest maritime model in the world.
