Bleekersvallei - Nature
Between heathlands and dune valleys, you can discover the quiet charm of one of Texel’s oldest nature reserves.
What makes the Bleekersvallei so special?
- Ancient dune landscape: The Bleekersvallei is one of the oldest dune areas on Texel and part of the National Park Dunes of Texel. Many of the dunes are more than 200 years old.
- Historical background: In the Middle Ages, this area became decalcified and eroded due to overgrazing. The name ‘Bleekersvallei’ refers to two historic bleaching fields where linen was bleached.
- Wild nature: Due to the lime-poor sand and the disappearance of rabbits, the vegetation has become rougher. You’ll walk among heather, sea buckthorn, elder, and gnarled shrubs.
- Seasonal spectacle: In August, the valley turns into a sea of purple as the heather blooms – a must-see for nature lovers and photographers!
- Birdwatching: At the birdwatching point between poles 15 and 17, you can overlook the dune valleys. Spot harriers, shrikes, Mediterranean gulls, and short-eared owls.
- Grazing in action: To keep the nature in balance, horses, cattle, and Texel sheep graze here – a good chance to encounter them on your walk!
- Varied landscape: Expect a fascinating mix of open dunes, young groves, and heathlands. With its parabolic dunes and ancient valleys, every walk is a new experience.
