Waalenburg - Nature

Nature reserve Waalenburg (Waal en Burg) is a lively polder full of flowers, birds, and history, located in the heart of Texel, just north of Den Burg.
What can you expect in nature reserve Waalenburg?
Abundance of meadow birds: In this bird paradise, black-tailed godwits, redshanks, and oystercatchers breed. Thanks to the tranquillity and rich food supply, it is one of the best places on Texel to spot meadow birds.- Sea of flowers in spring: In May and June, the wet grasslands turn a stunning purple, yellow, and pink with orchids, yellow rattle, and ragged robin. Saltmarsh plants like glasswort and sea aster also thrive here thanks to the brackish water.
- History of the polder: Once, Waalenburg was a saltmarsh area, still visible in the winding creeks. In 1654, the Ruigendijk was built, creating the polder. Since 1909, Natuurmonumenten has managed the area. Characteristic meadow mills still regulate the water.
Tranquillity and nature management: To protect the breeding birds, Waalenburg is closed to the public from 01 April until 01 July. Grass mowing only starts after 15 July so that young birds can grow safely.- Ice skating in winter: When frost arrives, Waalenburg transforms into a popular skating spot for locals. Between the meadow mills, a fairytale-like ice landscape appears.
- Viewing points: Several viewing points are spread throughout Waalenburg. Here you can enjoy views over the wide polder landscape and its many birds:
- De Staart
- Waaleburg
- Weegeswaal
- De Nol
- Hertenkamp
- Westerkolk
