In the Nieuw Buitenheim nature reserve on Texel, you’ll find two perfect spots for birdwatchers and nature lovers to enjoy the view of the birds sheltered from the wind: the birdwatching screen and the bird hide.

Birdwatching Screen Nieuw Buitenheim

• Location: The birdwatching screen is situated halfway along the dike, on the edge of the reserve.
• View: From here, you have an open view over the specially created shell islands and shallow pools where coastal birds such as avocets, common terns, and ringed plovers breed or feed.
• Accessibility: The screen is easy to reach – perfect for a quick stop during a cycling tour or walk.

Bird Hide Nieuw Buitenheim

• Location: The hide lies slightly deeper within the reserve and offers more shelter.
• Comfort: Inside, you can sit comfortably and stay dry while watching the bird-rich wetlands through the observation slits.
• Seasons: Especially in spring and autumn, this is a hotspot – you can often spot thousands of migratory birds here.

Practical Information

• Access: Both the screen and the hide are freely accessible.
• Getting there: They are located close to the parking and cycling paths, so you don’t have to walk far.

Don’t forget your binoculars or camera – thanks to the location in the middle of the nature reserve, the birds can often be seen surprisingly close up.
