The IJzeren Kaap near Oosterend is a remarkable national monument and former sea beacon offering a stunning view over the Wadden Sea.

What makes the IJzeren Kaap so special?

Historic Sea Beacon: Designed in 1854 by architect Quirinus Harder, who later also built the Texel Lighthouse. The beacon served as a non-illuminated navigation mark for shipping.
Historic Alignment Line: Together with the church tower of Oosterend, the beacon once formed an important navigation line for ships in the Texelstroom.
Birdwatching Spot: Today it’s a favourite location for birdwatchers. You can spot cormorants, eiders, grebes, and tufted ducks here.
National Monument and Restoration: The IJzeren Kaap, also known as Kaap Oosterend, was fully restored in 2010 and is a rare example of a cast-iron beacon still in excellent condition.

Location: On the Wadden Dike near Oosterend, on the eastern side of Texel.
Access: Freely accessible, easily reached by foot or bicycle from Oosterend.
Tip: Bring binoculars – the area is a paradise for bird lovers!
