Bertusnol - Observation point
On Texel, in the nature reserve De Muy, you’ll find the well-known lookout point Bertusnol, one of the highest dunes on the island. From this point, you have panoramic views across the nature reserves De Muy and De Slufter, and on clear days you can even see the North Sea shimmering in the distance. A true must-see for nature lovers, hikers and birdwatchers!
What makes the Bertusnol so special?
- Breathtaking views: From the top, you can overlook the young dune area of De Muy, the unique salt marsh landscape of De Slufter and, in the distance, Texel’s coastline.
- Stairway to Heaven: You reach the Bertusnol via a long, steep staircase with handrails made of sweet chestnut wood. Because of the steep climb, it’s affectionately called the “Stairway to Heaven”. A tough climb, but the view at the top is worth every step!
- Bird paradise: From this point you can see the famous spoonbill colony in De Muy. The spoonbill is a protected bird species, recognisable by its distinctive spoon-shaped bill. Bring your binoculars and enjoy the many bird species that live in this area.
- Shifting dunes: From the Bertusnol, you can clearly see how the wind shapes the landscape. The drifting dunes are constantly changing, offering a new view each time you visit.
- Historical touch: The name Bertusnol refers to Bertus, one of the first bird wardens of Staatsbosbeheer. From this spot, he monitored the spoonbills and ensured that walkers did not disturb the colony.
Walking to the Bertusnol
If you enjoy walking, you can include the Bertusnol in a beautiful route. For example, there is a 5.4 km walk by Staatsbosbeheer, starting from camping Kogerstrand or Mienterglop, which takes you past this viewpoint. Along the way, you walk through varied dune landscapes and experience the beauty of Texel in all its facets.
De Muy and De Slufter
The nature reserves you see from the Bertusnol are both well worth a visit:
- De Muy: A young dune area, famous for its spoonbill colony. A dynamic nature reserve where dunes, valleys and unique flora come together.
- De Slufter: Unique in the Netherlands, as it is openly connected to the North Sea. As a result, saltwater flows in at high tide, creating a rare vegetation found almost nowhere else.
