Eendenkooi Spang
On the eastern side of Texel, hidden in a peaceful duck decoy wood, lies the Eendenkooi Spang. This historic site offers a unique insight into the centuries-old craft of the decoyman and the traditional use of duck decoys on the island.
What can you expect at the Eendenkooi Spang?
- The Craft of the Decoyman: Learn how decoymen once caught ducks using decoy ponds and curved catching pipes. Discover the importance of silence and secrecy in their work.
- Decoyman’s Cottage and Mini Exhibition: In the white cottage, you’ll find a small exhibition about this ancient craft, presented by enthusiastic volunteers who are happy to share their knowledge.
- Guided Walks: Walk with the ranger along winding forest paths and take a look behind the scenes of this mysterious place. During the tour, you’ll hear stories about the decoyman’s life and the nature surrounding the decoy.
- Sayings and Expressions: Did you know that many old Dutch sayings, such as “to lead someone up the garden path” or “to go up in smoke”, originated from the duck decoy? Here you can discover how these expressions came to be.
About the Duck Decoys on Texel
Natuurmonumenten manages three duck decoys on Texel: Spang, Zuid-Haffel and Westergeest. Only the Eendenkooi Spang is open to visitors during the summer months; the other two serve as bird sanctuaries and are closed to the public.
Practical Information
- Location: The entrance to the unpaved path leading to the decoy is located halfway along Dijkmanshuizen road, on the eastern side of Texel.
- Visitor Information: Volunteer rangers provide explanations at the decoyman’s cottage and are happy to answer questions.
