Westerduinen - Nature

The Westerduinen form a beautiful and tranquil nature reserve on the western side of Texel, featuring a varied landscape of dunes, heathland, and forest.
What makes the Westerduinen so special?
- Ancient History: The dunes once belonged to the village of De Westen, which centuries ago was buried under drifting sand. Today, the area has become a lively and dynamic nature zone.
- Paradise for Bird Lovers: The Westerduinen are known for their rich birdlife. You can spot special breeding birds such as the marsh harrier and even the rare hen harrier. A favourite place for birdwatchers!
- Walking and Enjoying: Outside the breeding season, you can enjoy walking through the area. A recommended route starts from Westerslag towards Paal 14 and ends at Jan Ayeslag.
Viewpoint Kampeersnol: At the edge of the forest area De Dennen lies the Kampeersnol, a high dune offering a stunning panorama over the Westerduinen.
Practical Information
Location: The Westerduinen are located on the western side of Texel, just south of De Koog. The area is easily accessible via walking and cycling paths.- Access: Entry is free. During the breeding season, some trails are closed to give birds peace and quiet.
- Best Time to Visit: In spring and summer, the dunes are at their best – full of blooming plants and active birdlife.
- Tip: Combine your visit with a walk through the forest area De Dennen, a stop at forest pavilion Turfveld, or viewpoint Kampeersnol.
