Windmill Het Noorden

On the Wadden side of the beautiful Texel landscape, at Stuifweg to the north of Oosterend, stands the impressive windmill Het Noorden. This striking polder mill, built in 1878, played a key role in draining the homonymous polder and today is a hidden gem for nature lovers, photographers, and history enthusiasts.
What makes windmill Het Noorden special?
- Photogenic Location: Windmill Het Noorden is a fantastic place to photograph, especially at sunset. The combination of the mill, the expansive polder, and the dike makes it a popular subject for photographers.
- Historic Polder Mill: Molen Het Noorden was built to drain the polder that was reclaimed in 1876. The mill was operated by a miller who controlled the water level, carried out maintenance, and mowed the surrounding reed.
- Smock Mill: This octagonal smock mill has a rotating cap with a set of sails that can be turned into the wind – a beautiful example of Dutch windmill technology.
- Owned by Natuurmonumenten: In 1963, the mill was replaced by a modern pumping station. Since then, it has been owned by Natuurmonumenten and is operated voluntarily by a miller.
- Birdwatcher's Paradise: The polder around the mill is a hotspot for birdwatchers. Due to the calm and open landscape, special birds are often spotted here.
Practical Information
- Limited Opening Hours: The mill is not usually open for viewing inside, but it is typically open on special days such as Open Monumentendag and/or National Mill Day. On these days, visitors can admire the rotating sails and listen to the miller's stories.
